Field Notes
Description:
Low growing, erect plant with fine, needle-like leaves. Green/yellow flower cluster at top of plant. Emits a milky sap when plant is broken. Seed pods can expel seeds up to 16 feet from plant.
Habitat:
Sunken Meadow State Park, New York. Growing along the sides of the trail and in the dunes near the beach (sandy soil). Prefers open, disturbed areas.
Notes:
Native to Europe and introduced to North America originally as an ornamental plant. Is considered invasive or noxious in some areas. Potentially toxic to some livestock.
