Field Notes

Habitat:

4m gum tree in a forest where the cups are common

Notes:

I cannot imagine what this caterpillar is doing. There were several like this in the tree. I am uncertain of the identification although it seems fine

It was hit by wasps.
Yes there were several. It was a small tree about 4m and sparse. I kept one in container and it didn't do anything at all for a few weeks till the other night when it went brown because the container had been occidentally sealed
very interesting, Stephen ! I am curious. I wonder if it has anything to do with the blotchy leaf. You say there were several on the tree;where they all in the same state -atop purple fluff?
I would say no doubt about the cattie ID. But it certainly doesn't look like a cup building process with that purple stuff. Maybe they have been hit by a fungus? How's the progress going now? (1 week later)
any ideas what the caterpillar is sitting on? It is still there six hours later
