Comments (1)

You are a lucky person... you've found a Gopher Tortoise. They are now classified as a Threatened Species. They are called "Keystone" species in their sandhill habitats because, like the keystone in a stone arch which holds together all the other stones, dozens and dozens of other species depend on the presence of the tortoise. Especially the long and deep burrow.
