Automeris Moth

The Automeris moths have two adaptations for protection: the bright ringed eyes on the hind wings and when at rest, that they resemble a dry leaf. This is a female with thin yellow antennae and pink feet. The abdomen is normally dark brown with small bands of red, however this female is so engorged with eggs that the yellow skin of her abdomen is stretched, making her appear to have a brown and yellow banded abdomen. If you look closely at the last picture you can even see her eggs underneath the skin. Family Saturniidae.
