Field Notes

Description:

The Great Horned Owl is the heaviest extant owl in Central and South America and is the second heaviest owl in North America, after the closely related but very different looking Snowy Owl (B. scandiacus). It ranges in length from 43–64 cm (17–25 in) and has a wingspan of 91–153 cm (36–60 in)

Notes:

Found this guy hanging out on my private road. I kept my distance at first but then he flew and landed right above my car :) The first shot is angled weird because the only way I could get him right above me while staying in my car was to shoot him hanging upside-down out of my window :p I got out of my car, walked around, and even talked to a neighbor that pulled up and he didn't seem to care. He then looked of (last picture) and flew down into my orchard. I chased him down with a flashlight, found him, aimed my camera, couldn't find him and peaked back up only to discover him gone. What another great Earth Day surprise!
