Field Notes

Description:

Very small beetle, less than 3mm long with red and orange elytra with black markings. The pronotum and head are all black.

Habitat:

Mexican Bush Sage in backyard. This species is only found in San Diego county and into Baja California. It stays along the coastal ranges.

Notes:

Spotted by one of my teen nature enthusiasts :) Submitted to BugGuide. This is another new beetle for me.

Hi Seema, bugs are everywhere! Many of my bug spottings are from my own yard. Look near water such as a Riparian area or lake. Many are on bushes with flowers although they may not be on the flowers themselves. Look underneath the flowers and leaves. For me, it took a long time to train myself to see them. Now I'll walk past bushes and just notice something looks different. I'll stop and look for what isn't "right". Usually it's a splash of color or an odd shape that ends up being a bug :)
Dear Cindy, can u suggest me few locations to see bugs..ur and my place r nt much diff geographically...
I believe it is an Exochomus sp. I picked the one suggested above based on markings and location, but wait for confirmation in bugguide.
