Field Notes

Description:

Tiny baby opossum that my dog was playing with in the garden, I had to put it in the wood shed (open) so it's mother could find it again. I am amazed that even so tiny, they already have the instinct to "play dead" very convincingly (last picture). It was very tame and gentle. It still has the bluish eyes of a baby, although they spend almost 2 months in the pouch before emerging. I found it's feet to be very interesting. The front paws are unusual compared to other small mammals and the bottom of the foot is also really neat (see the 5th picture). Opossums are considered living fossils.

Habitat:

Garden at night, semi-rural area, San Cristobal de Las Casas, 2,200 meters.

Notes:

This baby matches D. albiventris, although this species is reported mainly for south America, from Colombia to Argentina.

Added a new picture of it's feet, which are really interesting.
Thank you Rieko! I was fooled for a minute and worried that my dog had hurt it, but after a couple of minutes it got up and was fine.
I love the series, especially the last one :-)
Thank you Dan, finib and Patty. It really was adorable.
I am glad you could save the baby opossum Lauren, it is very cute =) and maybe it fainted of horror, poor thing...
Very cute. It really does look dead in the last pic.
