Velvet ant
38.7981, -76.6965
Field Notes
Description:
I'm so excited - this is the first velvet ant I've ever found! Very speedy and hard to get a picture of. I think it's in the genus Timulla, but not sure as to the species. Any hymenopteran experts out there?
For those of you who don't know, velvet ants are not ants, but are wingless wasps. Ants and wasps are very closely related (they're in the same insect order: hymenoptera). Many velvet ants are very fuzzy and velvety looking, but this one wasn't, so in this case the velvet part is a bit of a misnomer.
Habitat:
Near the pine barrens area of Glendening Nature Preserve at Jug Bay
