Field Notes

Description:

The breeding males are unmistakable, jet black above apart from large orange-red patches on their wings and tails. Their breast sides are also orange, with the rest of their under parts colored white. These birds have been observed flashing the orange and yellow of their tails, on and off, to startle and chase insects from the underbrush.

Habitat:

Mason Farm Biological Reserve

Notes:

My first spotting of this bird!

Thanks for your nice comments, Gerardo, Jacob, Rieko and Jerry! It was indeed difficult to get good shots as it was pretty hidden in the foliage, but I knew it wasn't a bird I had seen before so I maneuvered around to get the best shots I could manage.
