Description:

V. velutina is a species of hornet which preys on bees. It is a little bit smaller than the European hornet. The queens may be 30 mm, the males to 24 mm, the workers are about 20 mm. It has characteristic yellow legs. It is native to China.

Well done on the ID. I have had this wasp floating around my folders for way too long. Here is another link for your records: http://www.vespa-bicolor.net/main/vespid/vespa-velutina.htm I suspect that we have a local subspecies of this hornet, as there are differences, but no doubt about velutina. It is also nice to learn that we must beware of nest locations. I have not seen one yet though. DAve
