According to bugguide.net, this species lives about 10-15 days as an adult and is usually found in late April in SW Or to C calif

I'm glad you got an ID on this one! I pulled out several books and did some Web searches, all to no avail.
Thank you ForestDragon! I've never seen one before. I'd come inside and had taken my glasses off to put sunscreen on, and the odd crimson color caught my eye
