Field Notes

Description:

25" long
Diver.Adult male neck, back and shoulders are white, Flight feathers, belly, tail are black. Head is white with black crown. Hindcheeks and nape are green. Breasts tinged pinkish.
Females- brown and barred. Forehead and long sloping bill merge. North Americas' largest duck.
Vocal- Slurred and grating notes.

Habitat:

Ocean and bays; breeds on rocky islands.
May- Sept.: Maine coast.
Oct.- April: Entire coast
