Field Notes

Description:

UPDATE - Looks like this is in the genus Symmerista. See below!

ORIGINAL POST - I'm stumped on this one. Maybe something in the family Noctuidae? Which could narrow it down to about 3000 species. :-(
Found this moth sitting on a stick on the ground in the middle of a path near the pine barrens of Glendening Nature Preserve at Jug Bay. Anybody have a clue as to which species?

Species ID Suggestions

Comments (3)

Your photos are clear and sharp, and so an identification to species is likely to be possible. Consider submitting the side and top (dorsal) views to BAMONA for IDing: http://www.butterfliesandmoths.org/node/add/sighting
Thank you Treichard! It does indeed seem to be in that genus, though it looks like identifying it to species is impossible. I will update the spotting.
Not certain of the species, but this look like a species of genus Symmerista (Prominent Moths). See http://bugguide.net/node/view/349 for a species guide. See http://www.projectnoah.org/missions/22837109 for a Maryland moth mission.
