Field Notes

Description:

Mostly black and red with white or black spots on many of the scales.

Habitat:

Found under a rock in thorn scrub habitat, he was put back under the rock after photos.

Umm it just sounds like any other animal hissing I guess. I bet on youtube there is a grumpy gopher snake hissing lol

These you are least likely to come across just out and about. Right now they are more active since they are looking for mates, but under rocks or roads at night will be your best bet.

http://www.californiaherps.com/snakes/pages/r.l.lecontei.html according to this link ,there is a spotting from Contra costa county and Alameda County. Alameda is coastal. They have a lot more of these in San Diego. I will have to see which part of Contra costa it was. i am in West Contra Costa.

Nope, completely harmless :) They are burrowers and spend a lot of time underground. Your biggest culprit for hissing will be a gopher snake, they are always grumpy. Many snakes will also shake their tail to hit against leaf litter and it sounds very similar to a rattlesnake, which is the whole reason they do it.

Are these venomous? This part of california has such thick bushes and foliage that it is almost impossible to spot anything. I have often heard some huffing sounds in the bushes as if something is trying to warn me. I have to listen to an audio to see how snakes sound when they hiss. Or maybe it was a possum.
