Field Notes

Description:

Relatively small pit viper located in the southeastern United States, usually growing to 3-4 ft long. Females grow larger than males, and often display darker coloration, but the same patterns. The copperhead has a mild hemo-toxic venom, which isn't deadly to humans. Most deaths that do occur are due to some type of allergic reaction.

Habitat:

Pine forests, leafy undergrowth, and usually under some sort of cover. The snake will lay out and bask in the early morning sun and retreat to cover as the heat I the day comes on.

Notes:

This snake is diurnal, meanin it hunts/feeds at night, so in the evening the snakes will stir and begin hunting
