Field Notes

Description:

Striking Tiger Moth, shining in metallic hues of purple, yellow, green, and orange. About 2cm body length, with black head and thorax covered in hair; abdomen is striped purple and orange; the feathery antennae (male?) produce a green sheen depending on light. Forewings have a metallic purple section and a yellow one, which becomes more green towards the wing tips. This moth also has a number of white spots: on thorax three behind the head and two more towards the abdomen, two on the base of the abdomen and a row along each side of it, at the base of the forewings and several on the black sections on the wings.

Habitat:

Montane pine forest in Sierra Chincua, at around 3000m above sea level in Michoacán, Mexico.
