Field Notes

Description:

A mottled click beetle with eyespots on the pronotum. Similar in appearance to the eyed click beetle (A. oculatus), but this species has smaller eyespots (hence myops), is thinner, and is less black, more mottled in appearance. This specimen was about 3 cm long.

Habitat:

Pine woods or mixed pine/deciduous woods. This specimen was on the concrete base of a parking lot lamp post at the edge of both deciduous woods and a small stand of young loblolly pines.

Notes:

The eyespots on this specimen are on the large side for A. myops, but smaller than usual for A. oculatus (http://www.projectnoah.org/spottings/17800007). The overall shape and coloration of the beetle are typical of A. myops.

I posted new photos. The first ones I took (including pic 3 now) were just after sunrise in very low light. These new ones were taken in the afternoon; the critter moved only a couple of feet in that time.
