Field Notes

Description:

Red and black Soldier Beetle of about 1 cm in length, with 2 black spots on the thorax. Pictures 2 through 4 are of an individual spotted on 18 April 2014 in the same place. The pictures of the beetles mating was taken on 5 May 2014, same place. Family Cantharidae.

Habitat:

Came to an ultraviolet light in the garden, San Cristobal de Las Casas, 2,200 meters.

Notes:

In the last picture, there is a group of tiny thrips (Order Thysanoptera) close to the beetles.
