Field Notes

Description:

Small, red mite that is slightly hairy with long legs. It's dorsal side is wrinkled.

This mite belongs to the family Erythraeidae and subfamily Callidosomatinae. This individual likely belongs to either the Callidosoma or Charletonia genus. While in their larval phase, individuals of these genera are parasitic on moths. After biting a hole into its host, larvae implement a stylosome (similar to a drinking straw) for drinking dissolved body tissues. As adults, they become predaceous on insect eggs.

Habitat:

Found crawling in moss and decaying wood on the side of a ridge in a dense mixed hardwood/pine forest in Northwest Georgia (Gordon County).
