Field Notes
Description:
Mushrooms with caps about 40 to 45 mm wide. The caps were grey and covered with grey felty growth which clumped into little cones towards the centre (pic #3). Flesh was white but the gills were a shell-pink. There were long and short gills which stopped short of the cap margin. The slightly shaggy cap margin was thin and hung free.
The stipe was thick and white becoming thicker towards the base and then tapering to a rooting tip. The stipe had a thick skirt-like annulus that tore-off quite easily. The free edge of the annulus was the same grey as the cap. The stipe below the annulus was covered with soft dark scaly outgrowths.
Spore print was white (pic#6)
Habitat:
Spotted growing along a track by a small lake. The area was previously covered by tall grass and rushes. The nearest trees were Acacia - wattle.
Notes:
The closest match I could find to this mushroom is Amanita inopinata. But this is not known to occur in Australia. It is from Europe and now seen in New Zealand.
