Field Notes

Description:

Common shore crab, with one claw larger than the other, even if not as marked as fidler crabs. Africana species is yellow and dominates african tropical shores.

Habitat:

They dig in the sand to hide. It feeds from algae, fungus and other decaying detritus found in the sand.

Ah! this one was very much alive! it was running and digging to hide in the sand. As it saw itself spotted and surounded, it fight back! Simulating chasing us. Kids were pretty scared. Quite a laugh forthe adults.

Wow, I love his warm yellow color! Nice find! I only ever find dead crabs in the sand! :-/
