Field Notes

Description:

Large moth; wingspan about 2 inches. Beautiful patterning on wings, dark brown with lighter brown and white, in a sort of complex banded pattern. Body brown. Cool fan-like antennae (visible in photos, if you look closely). Lower wings have a scalloped edge.

Habitat:

Spotted near a porch light at my house. Suburban area, with many trees and a large variety of plants. Major species include oak, maple, and pines (but I'm not good with trees). Wooded area nearby with stream.

Notes:

Could someone please tell me what this lovely moth is?
