Field Notes

Description:

Lime (or apple) green caterpillar, ~30mm long, with blue spots behind the head, muted yellow "racing stripes," small white spots throughout and an anterior horn.

Habitat:

Suburban area on tropical upland plateau.

Notes:

Spotted harboring on the underside of the leaf of a desert rose, Adenium obesum, upon which it was also dining. Since its herbivory was doing significant damage, the creature was removed to another location after posing for the mug shots above. Note the spiracles (black spots) along its length and the anterior dorsal horn. The spiracles are used for respiration; it would be interesting to learn if the horn has a purpose.

Hi Allen, Thanks for updating the ID. I have actually seen this website before and it is exactly what convinced me of the ID as well....good research on your part and an amazing spotting to boot :)
Thanks for the ID suggestion, Reza. After some online browsing, I agree and have updated the spotting. While looking around online I came across this site: http://www.silkmoths.bizland.com/dnerii.htm. Pictures posted there suggest that the larva in this spotting is fairly young. Incidentally, that same site contains "before and after" pictures of a desert rose which served as a food source for these larvae. In the "after" shot, the plant was completely stripped of leaves. I'm glad I noted my specimen's activities before my desert rose experienced a similar outcome.
