Field Notes

Habitat:

A species of maple native to northern and montane forests in eastern North America from southern Ontario east to Nova Scotia and south to Wisconsin, Ohio, and New Jersey, and also at higher elevations in the Appalachian Mountains south to northern Georgia.

Notes:

These are the seed pods and a few of the leaves of a young Striped Maple, or Moose Maple as it's also known.

Thanks drP. This is the first time I've noticed the seed pods on striped maple, and now I see there's even a spider in them:-)
