Field Notes

Description:

An overall brown streaked bird with a yellow patch on the face. When the males are displaying for the females, they raise their tails and feathers behind their necks up high.

Habitat:

Found in an open grassland area on a lek, which is where a group of males gets together to display. They display everyday for a few months, whether females are there or not. The location is not correct on the map because they are a vulnerable species.

Notes:

The Lesser Prairie Chicken numbers are drastically declining, mostly due to habitat loss. Mostly the oil companies coming in and putting in more roads and pads take up the lekking spots for the chickens. We didn't get to get to close so we made sure not to disturb them so that's why my pictures aren't great, but just getting to see and hear them was pretty amazing, and I'm glad I got to see them before they are all gone since that's where they are headed unless something drastically changes for them.

Beautiful birds Ashley, and another reason to get off fossil fuels.
