Description:

The smallest of the North American woodpeckers, the downy has a black and white back with a thick white stripe down the middle. The belly is plain gray, the head is streaked black and white, and the male has a red patch at the back of the head.

Habitat:

Found throughout North America, this guy was seen at the local park. He kept coming within several feet of us and didn't mind we were standing right there.
