Field Notes

Description:

This beetle is black in color. The head, thorax, and abdomen are clearly differentiated and its back is covered by a hard exoskeleton of chiton.

Habitat:

It was found in tecelote canyon in a dry dirt area. The area had long greeb grass, dry grass and weeds, which provided shade and shelter for the beetle. The beetle was found scurrying along the grass and tucked in hear the roots of the grass. The weather was a mild 77 degree sunny day.

Perhaps a Darkling Beetle although it's difficult to tell with this photo. The other option is a Click Beetle.
