Black Bug
Corimelaena pulicaria
42.4222, -74.031
Field Notes
Description:
A very small insect in the Thyreocoridae family, Corimelaena pulicaria is distantly related to shield or stinkbugs, Pentatomidae, through the superfamily Pentatomoidea. They are found very numerously on various plants, I saw thousands on the dandelions and surrounding areas! They were very hard to get a photo of, scurrying away at the slightest movement. You can see the dandelion pollen on the antennae and legs. The first thing I noticed about this species was its rotund black body with the silver edging around the bottom part of the insect.
Habitat:
Found in the thousands by Dandelions.
Notes:
Lifer! The first photo shows the insect's size in relation to the dandelion flower.
