it was singing its heart out on the top of the tree - various melodies, sounded like a whole flock.
almost plain brown on the upper side, white belly

It might be a brown thrasher. They are actually louder and more vocal than mockingbirds.
Thank you all. I didn't see the usual fieldmarks of a mockingbird and I thought it was to brown...
This looks to be a mockingbird
As you noted these birds mimic or "mock" the calls of other birds. They have even been known to mimic other sounds that have become part of the urban soundtrack like cell phones and chainsaws!
