Thanks! I guess in the meantime, we'll stick with what's safe for now.
Metzger et al. proposed reorganization of the genus Osmunda in 2008: http://pryerlab.biology.duke.edu/uploads/media_items/metzgar-et-al-osmunda-2008.original.pdf I don't know who decides if/when the changes get accepted.
Wikipedia says the new name for this fern is Osmundastrum cinnamomeum. The USDA still calls is Osmunda cinnamomea. I haven't read the references to decide if the name has been officially updated.
