Field Notes

Description:

large, epiphytic orchid, pretty sure about the species

Habitat:

montane rainforest, 800m

Notes:

This was the first orchid (of five) I spotted in the mountains near Pensiangan. I was so happy to look up and find this one blooming just above. Most of the orchids I spot are small or have very small flowers, usually less than 1cm. It was really special to spot one this large in full bloom.

Thanks Matti, I hear you about being cautious but the description and photos seems to be a really good match. Thanks Chun, the diversity of orchids is truly astounding.
I'm not sure if this is correctly identified, but it seems fairly similar to Bulbophyllum elongatum: http://www.rv-orchidworks.com/orchidtalk/orchids-other-genera-bloom/22737-bulbophyllum-elongatum.html. Of course, Bulbophyllum is an enormous genus, so proceed with caution =)
Such an unusual and beautiful orchid plant. The ways the flowers are arranged are truly mesmerizing.
