Field Notes

Description:

about 8mm, black with 4 large bronze spots, edges clear

Habitat:

cloudforest, 2200m

Notes:

I had a small wishlist in my head of some plants and animals that I wanted to see in Colombia. Well it didn't disappoint and I was able to cross quite a few off the list, especially the arthropods and fungi. I wanted to see a tortoise beetle since learning about them on Noah a long time ago. I was super excited to see my first one but even better, I saw a lot more of them here and different species elsewhere. More than I could have hoped for. These were fairly common around the campsite at Chicaque natural park.
I put this one on my camping towel for contrast but it didn't like to stay still for very long.

Thanks J for looking into this more. So I guess they guy had the wrong ID on flickr? I'll update it to unknown.
Lovely spotting! I checked Deloyala and was unable to find anything similar: http://culex.biol.uni.wroc.pl/cassidae/katalog%20internetowy/deloyala.htm
I've found an ID for this, at least to the genus. This guy spotted it at the exact same place. http://www.flickr.com/photos/entomopixel/7519848112/
