Field Notes

Description:

Flowerpiercers got their name from the fact that they have a sharp hook on the tip of their upper mandible which they use to slice open the base of flowers to get at the nectar.

Habitat:

cloudforest, 2200m

Notes:

A huge Abutilon bush grew beside the stairs of El Refugio in Chicaque natural park. There were always birds on it, including a lot of hummingbirds. Sometimes I would just set up on the stairs and wait for the birds to come.
