Yellow-headed Blackbird
Xanthocephalus xanthocephalus
38.5589, -121.63
Field Notes
Description:
Large Blackbird with a yellow head that extends to the lower chest on males. Females are a dark brown with lighter color patch on chest. Body is a glossy black with a white patch on the back of wings.
They were making noise almost similar to the Grackles and other Blackbirds. Saw a smaller flock of Blackbirds nearby and one Great-tailed Grackle.
Habitat:
Spotted these over a flooded area of a wildlife refuge. They were perched on islands made of reeds.
Notes:
This year there seems to be large flux in population compared to previous years for this area. I estimated 500 to 1000 birds in this location. The large island in the last image was only one of many islands that were packed with the birds.
Was just informed these birds don't nest here but further north and are only migrating through but they said my sighting showed that their numbers have increased and these were only the males.
