Field Notes

Description:

This is a female of yet a third Io Moth-like species in San Cristobal. The hind wings are dark grey with an eye spot surrounded by black and yellow. There is both brown and red phenotypes. The last picture shows the normal resting position of the moth. Family Saturniidae.

Habitat:

Came to an ultraviolet light in the garden, San Cristobal de Las Casas, 2,200 meters. The last 3 pictures are of a slightly redder specimen photographed on 14 May 2013 in the same place.

ugh! bayucca. OK, I'll check all this mess. :(
The term "Io Moth" is reserved for Automeris io: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Automeris_io I do not think that you can call all Automeris sp. "Io Moth" as common name. You might call them Automeris Moth or Saturniid Moth. To my knowledge there is no Automeris memusae, but only Leucanella memusae. These are 2 different genus/species. Please, check again, thanks.
