Description:
These lovely little birds are certainly frugivorous! I saw them for the first time ever right outside on March 24, 2014. They were in the fruit trees right outside of the school! However, I only had my phone camera so the photos weren’t the greatest. So every day this week I’ve had mom bring the camera in case they were back, and sure enough they were! There were so many cars in the pickup circle, by the time we got close enough for me to get out and get some photos, they had already flown away! It was like they were on their own schedule! I was finally able to get some good pictures today, without them flying away for too long! This is my favorite picture of all of them. I like their “masked” appearance (as if they were at a masquerade!) and their crest! They also have very cool red tips on their wings that are waxy. Their purpose is unknown, but it certainly contributes to their name! And of course, the lovely yellow tips bring the whole outfit together! They are so cute and much smaller than you would think—probably no more than nine inches long, though in pictures they look almost as big as Blue Jays!
Habitat:
Fruit trees in front of school entrance.
Notes:
Lifer!
