Field Notes

Description:

Big, all black beetle. About one inch long and 1/4 inch wide. Wasn't moving when we saw it, but when provoked it stood on its head. Didn't make any sounds or produce any smells, but we left it alone once it got in this defensive position.

Habitat:

Tecolote Canyon, San Diego, CA. Dry, desert area. Has been both cloudy and cold (low 60s) to sunny and very warm (high 70s, low 80s) this week

Notes:

Partner: J.G.

Species ID Suggestions

Comments (1)

Looks like a Tenebrionidae, possibly in the genus Eleodes. These darkling beetles, or stink beetles, are common throughout the SW USA - the defensive position you describe is typical; however, they often produce a distinct (and noxious) odour.
