Field Notes

Description:

Large black hairless bee, except for a pile of yellow fuzz on the thorax. Males have yellow/white face. Common in eastern North America, and the only member of its genus in much of range.

Habitat:

On a red Salvia greggii. They chew a hole in the base of these blooms to access the nectar.
