37.4115, -77.6821
Field Notes
Description:
An evergreen vine in the honeysuckle family (Caprifoliaceae). The red tubular flowers are about 2 inches (5 cm) long. Although not seen in these pictures, in many cases the opposite leaves (especially those nearest the flowers) are fused together at the base. The flowers are pollinated by insects and hummingbirds. Wikipedia specifies ruby-throated hummingbirds; don't know if other hummers like these flowers.
Habitat:
Partly shaded areas, spreading on the ground or climbing on neighboring vegetation.
