Field Notes

Description:

Very large wasp, 36mm length. Black thorax, Black abdomen with the last two segments red. Between the segments are hairs that are the same color as the segments. Yellow head (female) with black eyes. Triangular ocelli patch black.

Flight is labored and slow.

Habitat:

Adjacent to a small stream. Altitude 900m.

Notes:

At first sight, a very scary looking beast, but it is non-aggressive and showed me no interest while shooting. I don’t see this creature more than a few times in a year and photographic opportunities are very rare.

I have only seen one specimen on the web and from this I take my ID. I don’t consider this a reliable source and will be happy to be corrected. I just want the truth.

Ha! - how well you know me. I don't think we will ever find the truth for this one. Dave
Great spotting by the way. Love the colors on that thing. It does look intimidating.
