Field Notes
Description:
The land mullet is Australia's largest skink (Scincidae) and one of the largest in the world. At about 60 cm (24 inches) this one was about as large as they can get. Check the whole series to see the entire skink and its powerful body.
Habitat:
Found basking in the sun in the Lamington Ranges National Park, on the Ballanjui Falls track. The Lamington Ranges National Park contains the last remnants of Australia's sub-tropical rainforest. Species restricted to the rainforest of south-eastern Australia.
Notes:
Most species of skinks have no pronounced neck and their legs are relatively small. The largest known extant species of skink is the Solomon Islands skink (Corucia zebrata).
