Cane Toad
Bufo marinus subgenus Rhinella
16.2353, -93.8997
Field Notes
Description:
These two large yellow toads had odd lumps above the front legs, which are the poison producing parotid glands. The eyes were greenish with horizontal pupils. One seemed to be covered in peeling dry mud. They were both about 10 cm long and totally ungraceful.
Habitat:
In a back alley behind the Highway Toll Booth outside of Arriaga, Chiapas.
Notes:
Their skin contains toxic substances which can kill any animal that might eat them. They are native to the Americas but have been introduced to many areas of the world (especially the south pacific and Australia) for pest control, which was not always successful.
