Field Notes

Description:

A baby house sparrow begging for food. The parents were not actually in the nest box, but the chicks wanted food anyway. There at least 3 in this box on our fence that was set up 6 or 7 years ago. A good example of an altricial bird.

Habitat:

On our backyard fence facing an alley away from the backyard.

Notes:

I used a zoom lens while taking this, so I wasn't getting too close. I know it wouldn't be much of a problem, but I didn't want to stress out the parents who were probably very close by. I also used a flash because it is dark in the back of the box, and that's why there's a shadow.

Nice notes. You could add some references to this spotting, like an All About Birds page about sparrows, and this wiki article about altricial: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Altricial
