Long-tailed Meadowlark
Sturnella loyca falklandica
-51.6804, -57.7982
Field Notes
Description:
Quite a large passerine, known locally in the Falklands as a military starling. The males are very easy to recognise, with their bright red throat and breast. They have a very pleasant song, which is actually how I located the bird (he was singing his heart out!). They nest on the ground, in a nest woven from grass.
Habitat:
Prefers settlements and coastal areas. I found this one near the the sand dunes at Yorke Bay, Falkland Islands.
Notes:
I'm annoyed I couldn't get better photos, but we were walking back to the ship and had to get back in time for lunch...!
