Field Notes

Description:

Caterpillar of minute size.....about the same size as the blade of grass it was on. Creamy white with a brown stripe the length of its back. Feet are almost translucent. Approximately 2-3" in length.

Habitat:

Spotted in the grass of the lawn.

Notes:

This was a minute creature; my first thought on seeing it was "inchworm" but it definitely is not an inchworm.

Hi Elaine! This cute creature is actually the larva of a Sawfly, a type of wasp. I found several of these guys in the grass last spring. Unfortunately, finding a species is very difficult with the larvae, except for a few. The grass eating ones seem not to be documented well. Here is my spotting of a grass eating one: http://www.projectnoah.org/spottings/22656144 Here is a link to BugGuide that gives more info on Sawflies: http://bugguide.net/node/view/112
