Field Notes

Description:

Male bird exhibits breeding colors as shown. Some specimens have a white throat, others have a yellow throat. Yellow stripe on top of head can be expanded at will into a bold yellow crown.

Habitat:

These birds were abundant along the shore of Prospect Lake, an artificial reservoir near downtown Colorado Springs. They were feasting on midges, tiny flies that had hatched from the lake. Surrounding landscape is lawns, ornamental trees, playgrounds, residential neighborhoods, and some commercial buildings.
