Field Notes

Description:

orange flowers, long stames, large tree 20 - 30m tall

Habitat:

tropical rainforest, along rivers

Notes:

I spotted a few of these trees growing along rivers in Sabah but the flowers were always too high up to get a close up of them. Finally I spotted a tree with flowers in reach, so I broke off a small branch to get some macros of the flowers. It wasn't without costs however. The blooms and stem were covered in small biting ants and by the time I got the branch I endured at least 10 bits from these ants. Though they were small, they pack a painful bite that also swelled after. Thankfully they didn't last too long.
Spotting 2600!

Thanks Jonathan for the ID. Great to get an ID for such a cool tree and flower. Chun, surprisingly, this isn't related at all to Ixora.
OKay, this is totally amazing. I have never seen anything like this before.
