Field Notes

Description:

A perennial plant with green, deeply lobed leaves and white flowers with 5 petals. The entire plant is covered with hairs that release an irritant that causes a very painful sting. (I have first hand experience with this.) Flowers appear in Spring & Summer.

Habitat:

Found in dry, sandy soils, especially in dry pine woods and scrub. Native to southeastern North America.

Notes:

The tap root is edible.
