Field Notes
Description:
The bees have a body length of 13 - 15 mm (females) or 12 - 15 mm (male). The females are brown hairy upper part while males are hairy reddish brown. It is flying from mid-March to early July.
Habitat:
The species is widespread in southern, central, northern and southern Europe. They are almost exclusively pollinating plants from pea family (Faboideae), foraging from bush vetch (Vicia sepium), tufted vetch (Vicia cracca), meadow vetchling (Lathyrus pratensis), lucerne (Medicago sativa), white clover (Trifolium repens) and red clover (Trifolium pratense). D.B. Baker (1964) states that the bee is polylectic, visiting a number of Fabaceae, Boraginaceae, Labiatae and Scrophulariaceae.
