Field Notes

Description:

This spotting is about a young Double-crested Cormorant who has just finished fishing It chose a dead tree trunk as a good spot for drying off, cleared water from its feathers by vigorous shaking then spread its wings wide to dry in the air.

Habitat:

Green Cay Wetlands Preservation Area.

Notes:

When I took this series (and as I worked on this posting) I kept thinking this was an Anhinga. Both Cormorants and Anhingas dry their wings by spreading them and holding them out. I know Anhingas lack oil glands and that is why they air dry; I'm not sure about cormorants.
